summary of workshop activity
Looking specifically at concept design and interface design for GPS technologies with a group of Multimedia Designers.

  • Introduction to GPS and Landlines technology.
  • Walk 1 – short walk to see how it all works.
  • Draw memory maps of the route.
  • Compare these maps with routes in googlemaps.
  • Walk 2 – exploring Landlines as a drawing tool. Viewed in Mapper.
  • Analysis and discussion of hardware and live graphical representation.
  • Discussion of complexity of interface design for public access to locative technologies.
  • How can Landlines be used to reveal hidden aspects of the city – as stories, personal reflections on memory, emotion and thought.
  • Walk 3 – taking photographs in Landlines to explore a theme.
  • Artists talk about Landlines projects, Artists and Industry collaborations, and funding opportunities for this kind of work.

summary of feedback

  • Interesting reflection on walking and gps is inspiring and creative.
  • Using GPS changes how people use and perceive the place they are in.
  • People wanted to draw shapes with their walks.

feedback
"It made me consider my movements and how I could draw things with the device."

"I walked in ways that I normally wouldn't... The purpose wasn't to get to a place, more how I got there."

"The images were great. I like them because they 'rooted' the 'route' to a time frame and acted as proof of the journey."

"The freedom to choose a theme and have fun taking images and drawing lines pertaining to that theme lets you be artistic in an active way."

"It made me think about the lines of paths in recreational spaces and made me explore them. It made me interact with objects like lamp posts, walls, signs and paths in a much more playful way."

"When I was 'drawing' using the devices I seemed to ignore landmarks and concentrate on the negative space created by buildings and how I can interact with that."
