Length of Workshop – 3 hours

Exploring the potential of Landlines within local council
town planning.
- Introduction to GPS and Landlines technologies.
- Walk 1: short walk to see how it all works.
- Viewing and discussing routes in Google maps.
- Discussion of the methods town planners currently use
to assess and document activity in the town, and an overview of the
'Lynch Study'.
- Walk 2: Taking photographs in Landlines, following key
areas of interest such as 'disused shops', or 'busy areas'.
- Discussion of using Landlines in a planning context was
instigated by viewing the new routes in Google Maps.

- Useful in imaging town use, e.g. empty shops, flow of
people.
- Good to have a small unobtrusive device in a public place,
and will be even better when GPS is incorporated into phones.
- Possible use for Highways services mapping problem roads.

"It could be used to make a town guide (like rough guides)."
"It could be used to map town centre shop occupancy,
and to map pedestrian routes through town centres."
"It was interesting to see the visual pattern of your
movement through Huddersfield."
"It would be useful in educational projects."
"It has potential in 'real' world issues e.g. evaluating
people's shopping habits / travel patterns/preferences for different locations."
